Obituary of Jerry Allan Toyzan

  Jerry Toyzan passed away Wednesday May 7, 2025 at the age of 92.  Jerry was born April 4, 1933 in Bay City, Michigan.  He was a lifelong resident of Bay City and was a member of St. Boniface (All Saints) Parish.  Jerry graduated from Bay City Central High School in 1952. He excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. He also led the city in points scored while earning all-Saginaw Valley League honors as a halfback in football.  He continued his education at Central Michigan University, majoring in education, and lettering four seasons as a defensive back in football, and as an outfielder in baseball.

 

Following Jerry’s graduation, he began teaching at Washington Intermediate, and then he spent the remainder of his career at Bay Central High School.  He taught for 36 years before retiring to care for his wife, Mary Alice.  In addition to teaching, Jerry coached football for 33 years, serving as a Freshman Coach, a Junior Varsity Coach and Varsity Assistant Coach.  Jerry was a Little League, Pony League, Connie Mac, and American Legion baseball coach during the summers.  He was the Varsity baseball head coach at Bay City Central High School for 13 seasons, winning the school’s first district title in 1977.  Jerry also coached Freshman and Junior Varsity basketball at Bay City Central High School and served brief stints as Varsity Coach at both Bay City Central and Handy High Schools. In addition, a batting cage is named after him at Northeast Little League Field.  He was a member of the National Education Association, Michigan Education Association, Bay City Education Association, Moose Lodge #169; the Elks, Michigan Public School Employees’ Retirement System, and was inducted into the Bay County Sports Hall of Fame.

 

 Jerry is survived by his sons, Michael (Mary) Toyzan of Bay City and Todd (Christine) Toyzan of Freeland; daughter-in-law, Amy Toyzan; grandchildren, Heidi (Steve) Hockman, David (Rachel) Schmidt, Missty (Steve) Wilson, Ryan (Hayes) Holderness, Marley Schmidt, Sara (Lucas) Treder, Benjamen (Ally) Toyzan, Anthony Toyzan, Stephanie (Cole) Schlicker, Nicole Toyzan, Joshua Schmidt, and Ashley and Brad Little; great-grandchildren, Lexi, Tori, and Chase Hockman, Sullivan and Sawyer Schmidt, Emily Wilson, Ian and Levi Treder, Eli and Pat Toyzan, Shay and Wren Schlicker. He was predeceased by his wife and the love of his life, Mary Alice Toyzan, whom he married on August 28, 1954 at St. Boniface Catholic Church; daughter, Dawn Marie Schmidt; son, Patrick Norwood Toyzan; brothers, Alexander Jr., Larry and Gordon Toyzan; sisters, Nancy Toyzan and Betty Eggum.  He was predeceased by both of his parents, Alexander Sr. and Vonda Toyzan;  and his wife’s parents, Norwood and Alice Floto.

 

A Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, May 24, 2025, at the Hyatt Ewald Funeral Home, 700 N. Monroe St., Bay City MI, with E. J. Brown officiating.
