Obituary of Edward "Duke" R. Woods

Woods., Edward R., D.O. (Duke) Bay City, MI Dr. Edward Woods passed away at home on Tuesday, September 8th. He was 83. Dr. Woods was born in Pontiac, Illinois on September 13th, 1931. He attended high school in Pontiac, and went on to college at Illinois Wesleyan University and Washington University in St. Louis. He attended medical school at the Chicago School of Osteopathic Medicine and was an active supporter of the osteopathic profession throughout his life. On September 12th, 1953 while in medical school he married Helen Osterman of Bloomington, Illinois. After the birth of their first son Edward, they moved to Bay City, Michigan in 1963. Besides his practice as a general surgeon, Dr. Woods also specialized in orthopedics and sports medicine, acting as surgeon for many local school teams, including Saginaw Valley University. He was a member of the American College of Surgeons, and received the special designation of "Fellow" in that organization. He served as Chief Surgeon for both Bay Osteopathic Hospital and Saginaw Osteopathic Hospital. Dr. Woods loved playing golf, with his favorite local course being Bay Valley. He especially enjoyed getting in a quick nine on his way home from Saginaw in the summer evenings. When he wasn't playing golf, he liked watching golf on tv. He also loved riding around town on one of his bicycles. He was seen by many folks in Bay City while out on his bike, picking up his favorite newspapers and bringing them home in his bright yellow backpack. He also enjoyed looking after his cats. Dr. Woods is survived by his wife Helen, his three sons Edward (Kathy), Andrew and Robert (Jan Miner), as well as his four granddaughters. He is missed greatly by his family, friends, and all the people in town with whom he would routinely stop and chat. A Private service has been held.
